Since upgrading to ML, except for symbols my key board will not repeat strokes.

For example if I want to say ' awwwwwwwwww', I have to repeatedly hit the w. Before I could just hold it down to repeat.
I can do it with ....................,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! etc. just not letters or numbers.
anyway to change this?

Have you checked your settings for the "Keyboard" System Preferences?

Yes, unless I missed something?

One other place to check is the "Universal Access" System Preference. It has some keyboard settings that may impact things.

Thanks Nick, nothing there either.
I appreciate the help though.
Guess I will just have to get used to it this way.

Apple disabled it starting with Lion. You can re-Enable it in the terminal. Here is a url. Look for enable Key Repeat and try that line in the terminal.

The OS X Mountain Lion Survival Guide

If you can't find it in the article, open the terminal and paste in this line.

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false

You're right Dennis. I have Mountain Lion on my MBP...and I just tried the key repeat thing...and it doesn't repeat!!!:(

If Apple disabled this with Lion (over a year ago)...why the heck does the "Keyboard System Preference" still have the "Key Repeat Rate" and "Delay Until Repeat" adjustments still available??

Very confusing Apple!

I was just doing some "playing around"...and I noticed that although the key-repeat doesn't work for "regular" alphabet letters...the key repeat thing does work for special characters.

For example...if you press....option + g...you get the special character for the copyright symbol ©....and if you continue to hold both keys down...it will repeat like you would expect.

This just doesn't work for "regular" alphabet letters. Confusing.

- Nick

p.s. Yes...I realize that if you press & hold some single keyboard keys...you get alternative characters.:)

Way... way too many specs to list.
Once keyboard repeat is re-enabled, you can still get the alternate keys the old fashioned way

I do all the time. ü ö ß ä etc.
