Your Mac's Specs
mbp 15 2009, mbp 13 2010
you are not the only one that is frustrated with HDMI hook up to tv, you have to use audio cable (both male ends) from headset plug on mbp to tv audio in,
do this system preferences> sound> output> HDMI should let your audio comes out of TV.

Nellies,

For a specific and definitive recommendation, you will need to provide us with the details of which MacBook Pro 17" you have.
In particular, because not all mini-displayport models provided audio support via the mini-displayport.

I prefer to have the year it was manufactured, model and the processor speed,
such as '08 MBP 17" 2.6Ghz.
