I have a macbook pro that I bought barely over a year ago. Apparently the hard drive is failing, when I start it up the gray screen appears with the apple logo and after the progress bar gets to about 10% it shuts off. When I went to the apple genius bar he told me I can get my data back with an external hard drive. He told me to use a FireWire cable from my mac to another mac, but when I tried booting from the FireWire hardrive on the other mac, it did the same thing as it did on mine. So is there any way I can get this data back?

Commercial recovery is quite expensive but you might like to try Data Rescue 3 which has a trial version available to see if it can access the drive. See right hand column for demo download. Too late to tell you now always run a backup on an external drive.
