i guess I'll try being really descriptive here to figure out the solution, so...

I bought an iPhone from a friend (1st gen), unlocked and whatnot. I put my SIM but his contacts, mail, etc were still all there so I went to General settings and went to delete everything.

That's when it started to get odd, every time I would turn on the iPhone it would start up and freeze at the loading screen. Also on the top right there would be a little small part of what I assume is the Home screen.

I tried doing the restore thing and I had to do an iPhone update on my laptop while my iphone was connected, so I did it in about 2 hours. It's been a few hours and now my iPhone will show the battery bar and it will blink red in the end. I connect the charger and after a bit it boots up by itself and then I go into the logo freezing issue all over again.

I don't think I can do the restore thing again because i have to have the USB charger connected at all times because the battery is so low.

Help? I'm really confused

The 1st gen iPhone is now 5 years old so the battery is most likely shot and needs to be replaced for starters. A weak battery might explain the other issues but it's hard to tell. Not sure why you would buy an iPhone that is that old, anything before iPhone 3GS is limited in iOS compatibility and unless you got it for almost free, you overpaid for it..
