I went to use disk utility to reformat an external hard drive to use with time machine. did every thing like normal, chose mac os extended encrypted, entered my chosen password. when is was done i was left with the hard drive as a Logical Volume Group.
Does anybody know how it can be changed to a hard drive that can be used with time machine?

I moved your post here to the correct forum and enhanced your title. "Help" is not an adequate title. Everyone needs help.... :)

As to your hard drive: Remove the encryption. Why do you want to bog down your backups and ability to restore with encryption? Format the external hard drive as HFS+ (Mac OS Extended Journaled) and you should be good to go.
