G'day and welcome to the forums.

On startup? What computer and operating system? How much memory? Tried to boot from install disk and run repair disk from there or Command-R on startup for Lion/Mountain Lion?

Have you tried resetting the PRAM - boot and hold down Command Option P and R keys all at the same time until after the third chime? Tried SMC depending on the model - unplug froam mains and leave unplugged for a couple of minutes and reboot?

New user and I'm locked into the spinning wheel. How to exit?

Apple Menu > Force Quit

Select the app that is not responding, click Force Quit
