mail disappears

Hi,
I am new to forums. On Macbook pro, and yesterday my mail stopped working. Got a message to start it from applications and that didn't work either.

Then it totally disappeared. How to I reinstall/find it? It no longer is in Dock or in Application folder.
Using 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
