USB hubs (with their own power source) stopped working. The two ports on the macbook are still functioning. Would upgrade to Mountain Lion help? Is this another issue?

Unknown - but if you can plug directly into the macbook on the same port and it works - then your hub had a hardware failure. It isn't unheard of - I've had USB hubs go out over the years.
