Daughter just purchased a used MacBook that is running Mt Lion. Besides the original HDD, the previous owner installed a SSD in the CD/DVD bay. Daughter bought to use for college and saw no reason why she'd ever need a CD/DVD, but now there is one program she wants to install and has it only on a CD. I want to get a CD/DVD reader/player for her as a gift, but the superdrive that Apple sells is only for those MacBooks that never had a CD/DVD. Any suggestion for a CD/DVD reader that she could use to install programs or even to rip some of her old CDs to iTunes?

HarryB2448, thanks for the info. Buying something outside the Apple store if often a gamble, so I was just wondering if someone had specific experiences that would help me choose what & where to buy.

As one that had been building his own rigs for over 10 years when I bought my first Mac ('06), I was very skeptical about these so called "Mac" specialist places figuring they were only ripping off the general public based on a name for stuff you could get anywhere else for half the money.

Some of them are, but this is not the case with OWC. They are Mac specialists and while you may be able to find a little cheaper prices on some things at newegg, amazon, etc.; their prices are fairly competitive. For those not sure and don't want to spend the time it takes to look all over the web for the absolute rock bottom lowest price, I have no problem recommending OWC. If they're selling it, they've tested it with Macs. Have bought a lot of stuff from them over the past few years now and always have been satisfied with the products. They also have excellent customer service that has taken care of any issues I've had.

(I've bought a bunch of stuff from them even after I spent the time scouring the web - in a couple of cases a month or more - to see if I couldn't get it better/cheaper. They are my 1st stop now when looking for just about any hardware to go with my Macs. And I can tell you that I don't buy any piece of electronics without what some might call "exhaustive" research.)
