i have 2 1gb sticks it recognizes one as a 1gb stick and 1 as a 512mb stick the maximum accepted is 2gb and that what i have in there
there both 1 gb sticks
When you go to the "Apple" drop down menu...and select "About this Mac"...how much ran does that window say your iMac has?

Related to Harry's question above. Where did the ram that's in this iMAc G5 come from?
Mac's (especially older Mac's) can be very sensitive to what ram is installed in it. If you don't know where the ram came from...it's most likely not fully Macintosh compatible...and probably came from a Windows computer.

one is a crucial stick and that shows up as 1gb
and 1 is a stick that says dell that shows up as 512
And if the Dell memory is one sided, having chips on one side only, there is your answer.
