My Mac won't connect to my TV

I have an HDMI cable and a mini display port plug for the HDMI cable, and have connected both to my tv and macbook but nothing happens. I've tried to turn off my tv and mac, and tried starting my tv first. I also tried to go to detect displays but when i click it, nothing happens....
