iMovie HD aspect ratio problem

My apologies if this has been covered before. I did a search and didn't find an answer...

I've had this problem for years, and have looked but never found a solution. Why is it that once I've edited video in iMovie HD, unless I export it in 640x480 size, the aspect ratio is never correct? For instance, the videos I take with my camera are 1920x1080. But if I choose that option, the exported video, though the same size, has black bars at the top and bottom that result in the image itself being squeezed out of ratio. I also get the black bars if I export in 640x480 size, but in that case, the image is in the correct aspect ratio.

In the attached image, the top one is what it's supposed to look like, and the bottom one is what I actually get.

Please let me know if you need more information to answer my question.

Thank you.

Imovie HD = very, very, very outdated software. I'm not at all surprised it has an issue with "Full" HD aspect ratios.

My suggestion would be to move up to the current iMovie, but I would add that it's likely that you're not getting the export settings quite right in your QuickTime export. However, iMovie HD being six years old, I've long since forgotten how the exporting options are set and have now way of testing that anymore.

iMovieHD gives you a choice of making a HDV1080/Widescreen movie in the New Create Project dialogue box. Click on the Video Format triangle.

Not having any 1080 video, I've just created a widescreen(16:9) project. I Shared it to Quicktime using the simple Full Quality setting and the video filled the Quicktime player window without any black bands or distortion. I also shared to Quicktime using the Expert Settings, and then from the Options>Video>Settings I chose 1080, and again it played withoiut any blackbars or distortion.
