I currently have Macbook Mac OS X 10.5
I need Mac OS X 10.6 or Mac OS X 10.7 or higher.
How do I accomplish this and will I lose everything on my current Mac?

Thanks.

OS 10.6 & 10.7 install media is no longer available on the Apple online store since the release of OS 10.8. If you need OS 10.6 0r 10.7...calling Apple via their "800" number is the only way (at the moment) to purchase 10.6 or 10.7.

As far as "losing everything". Upgrading the OS does not cause anything to be lost...but it never hurts to back everything up first. Also be aware...that some of your applications that currently run fine with OS 10.5...may not be compatible with OS 10.6 or 10.7 (in fact I can almost guarantee)...that at least some...if not many of those applications will not run with OS 10.7.

- Nick

p.s. You may be able to purchase OS 10.6 install DVD's on e-Bay...but from what I understand they are very expensive at the moment. So you're better off calling Apple.

Yes you can if you have 10.6.8 or later on your machine. You need 10.6.6 because in that update Apple gave us the MAS (Mac App Store) and thats the only legal way of dl'ing 10.8

You haven't told us what exact model MacBook you have...and you never mentioned (before your last post) that you were interested in running OS 10.8.

If you're currently running OS 10.5 on your MacBook...there's a strong possibility that it doesn't meet the system requirements for OS 10.8. So we need to know exactly what MacBook model you have.

Thanks for the info...but need one more bit of info...what video hardware does it have?

Go to:

- Apple Menu
- About this Mac
- More Info
- then click on "Graphics/Displays" (left column)
- then look to the right for the graphics hardware info...next to the heading "Chipset Model:"

Ahh...that's good...your MacBook does meet the requirements for OS 10.8:) (there were some older MacBooks with the 2.0ghz cpu that cannot run 10.8).

Here's the deal ("TattooedMac" mentioned it earlier)...you still need to have at least OS 10.6.6 installed on the computer in order to have access to the "Mac App Store" (MAS)...since you can only download OS 10.8 via the MAS.

This means you still need to call Apple to purchase OS 10.6...install it once you get your disk...then download OS 10.8 if you still want it.

Thanks for the info! :)
Can you give me an estimate as to what all this might cost?

Snow Leopard disk should cost $29.00...the OS 10.8 download is $19.99.

Ah. Now I'm starting to wonder if its better to just buy a new computer all together....

You're kidding right??? There was a time when Macintosh OS upgrades cost $129 bucks for just a single upgrade!

OS 10.6 & 10.8 (two upgrades) will only cost you around $50 bucks. A new 13" MacBook Pro will cost you at least $1199 + tax (the tax will cost you more than the two OS upgrades).

I'm not seeing the logic in your last post!:(

I guess my question is when does upgrading a comp become a waste, and the need for new one is obvious. I'm not sure about this when it comes to Macs....PC's well they just stink lol

Typically...when folks talk about upgrading costs & when does it NOT make sense to spend the money...they're talking about the hardware...not the OS (software).

If upgrading your MacBook to OS 10.8 will cost around $50 bucks...and a new computer will cost you $1199+tax...which of those two numbers is more "agreeable"??;)

Then when in your opinion would be the time to buy a new comp? Another year, 5 years. I know macs are awesome, but I'm sure at some point they become obsolete.

The time to upgrade...is when a computer will no longer do what you want or need it to do.

Since you're still running OS 10.5 (which was discontinued 3 years ago...and THREE OS versions have been released since)...on a 2009 Macbook. It would seem that your computing needs are not too demanding.

I happen to be using a 2008 MacBook Pro (older than your computer)...running OS 10.6.8...and I'm having no problems whatsoever!:)
