If i download and install mountain lion from the App store will I lose all my files and programs or will it just upgrade the os. currently using snow leopard.

All your files and programs will be intact. But... make a backup anyway just to play it safe. Also, our advice is to make a ML flash drive before installing ML. Follow the directions given here.

Also, one more point.... Any program that you currently have which contains PPC code will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion. For example: Office 2004.
