Chief Executive Office of Apple, Tim Cook, took the opportunity to express his delight with his company’s financial performance as well as paying reference to a number of notable going-ons within Apple in the last few weeks:

We’re thrilled with record sales of 17 million iPads in the June quarter. We’ve also just updated the entire MacBook line, will release Mountain Lion tomorrow and will be launching iOS 6 this Fall. We are also really looking forward to the amazing new products we’ve got in the pipeline.

I'm wanting to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Is there anything I should know or do before hand? I'm already using Lion.

Our blogging team should be posting an article about it any time now.

In the absence of that, I'd say start backing up now. You'll want a good, full backup before you even think about upgrading.

Make a backup with Time Machine and optionally clone your hard drive using either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Also do some reading on how to make a bootable Mountain Lion disk before installing it.

Yes do a complete backup via TimeMachine or something like SuperDuper. Repair Permissions or use some like MainMenu 1.7.4 and rune all the scripts except for Remove .DS_Store Files and Spotlight Reindexing and then you should be right to go.

Check to make sure your apps are up to date too. I recommend this app:

Too many...
I'll be looking forward to hearing how the upgrade goes from fellow MF users. I'm not sure if I want to upgrade just yet. I've been having a consistent problem with Safari REALLY slowing down...way more than usual, and is related to Safari Web Content.

I'm doing a clean install on my iMac now. Downloaded the installer and made a bootable drive on a 16GB flash drive I had available. If all goes well, in about 30 minutes I'll have a sparkly-clean install of 10.8. :)

Contemplating doing the same, but it's late and I have to work in the a.m. I'll likely leave it for tomorrow, but am sorely tempted, of course.

write to apple at uptodatesupport.apple.com, I am in the same boat as you are.
I know some people have been buying the osx and get the refund, before
getting their code, last resort is this.

I think everyone should just take a "timeout" and relax. As the popularity of Apple machines grows and more and more folks are coming over from the dark side, the demand has gone up. Remember the long lines for the first iPad?

Just be patient, you'll get your codes for the free download but it may take a while. Uncle Tim has not forgotten about you. O:)
