Mate of mine has an old iMac form back in the dark ages of 2006.

The iMac is only meant to take a maximum of 3gb Ram. However I can't find the 1.5GB sticks anywhere, I'm sure they used to make them but maybe I was dreaming.

So he was wondering if it's ok to go with a 2GB and a 1GB stick? Someone told me once the uneven sticks wouldn't work, that might be a pub fact though. And what would happen if he just put 2 x 2GB sticks in there?

Sorry if this has been asked before!

The 2GB+1GB combo will work fine, you can even do 2x2GB but the system will only likely see 3GB and thus 1GB is wasted money.

Some of the iMac models released during 2006 only have a max. ram of 2gig. So it would be best to be VERY specific about what iMac model this is before purchasing ram.

Yeah I noticed that, we've double checked it and it seems fine to got for 3GB. It's a late 2006 model, iMac 6,1.

Thanks for all the help guys, he's bought a 2GB and 1GB stick for it.

The only difference a 2 and a 1GB stick will make is the RAM will not be a matched Pair and running in True Dual Channel. On some tests there is a small penalty, but it will run fine. Many with that iMac use 3GB. You can put in 2 2GB sticks and have it in Dual Channel Config if you wanted. Just the last GB would not show.
