I just recently replaced my Keyboard because some keys were dead and some sticking.
Plugged my new one in and none of the F keys work right. The volume up does the dashboard and etc. so on. I cannot figure out how to restore the normal functionality to this KB and I have tried the preferences already.

What kind of keyboard did you buy and which Mac Pro do you have?

Keyboard

I'm not sure how to respond. It's the standard apple keyboard. It isn't wireless.

I'm not sure how to respond. It's the standard apple keyboard.

The reason for the earlier question was...there are LOTS & LOTS of replacement keyboard options. Almost ANY USB-based (and many wireless) keyboards will work. These can be:

- Apple keyboards
- 3rd party Macintosh compatible keyboards
- keyboards primarily made for Windows computers

Since (originally) you didn't mention what brand/model replacement keyboard you purchased...we had no idea what you purchased (until you told us in post #4).

OK so it's the exact same keyboard that came with the computer from the apple store. Any reason why, the dashboard, volume controls and expose icons do not do their intended task?

I guess my second question would be; are there really 3rd party keyboards with the F keys designed exactly like the Apple MacPro keyboards with the same functionality and icons on the buttons, seems like that would be some type of design infringement but whatever, can any of you help me? Why is it not working the exact same as my former KB. It's the exact same one.

Check the pic below. Do you have that use F-Keys as standard Function keys checked?

That is System Preferences, Keyboard.

Can't hurt. I am using that very keyboard here on my iMac and the Apple keys all work. What version of OSX you running?

Edit: I just checked and unchecked that option and it changes without a restart. When I have that checked, Volume up does Dashboard, Volume Down does one Expose function.

Also just in case, run Software Update. See if new firmware shows for the keyboard.

how bizarre, that's what is exactly happening and I restarted and it checks it automatically. and it doesn't change when I select on or off. This is irritating.

That keyboard will not work with Leopard. You need an earlier model for it to work with Leopard. The one you purchased needs at least Snow Leopard 10.6.3.

That is a good catch. The older ones would but not the later models. They work but some keys will not.

I agree. I think it's very unfair. I would have never known except for all the reading and helping I do here. Sorry!

In case you guys didn't know why this is… if you select that option to use the F-keys as standard function keys, then the settings in the Keyboard Shortcuts preferences take over. If you check that, you should see that Show Dashboard is mapped to F12 and Mission Control (or maybe Show Desktop?) is mapped to F11. You can, of course, change those or disable them.
