MPB to TV which cable?

I am able to use the various TV catch-up services such as BBC iPlayer and thus watch programmes on my MPB. But which cable do I need to hook the MPB to an HD TV? Are there any potential problems? I would hate to mess up either the MPB or the TV.

depends on your mbp model, if it is post mid 2010 you can get a mini display port adapter
to your mbp then other end using the hdmi to tv hdmi port.
if it is pre mid 2010 mbp you have to have extra audio cable both male ends to tv's audio in jack one end,
to the mbp speaker jack.

My MPB was bought at an Apple Store in December 1999 so I'll need the extra audio cable. I presume the black cable in the illustration goes to a USB port on the MPB; the large block connector takes the other end of the black cable and the small connector goes into the HDMI socket of the TV.
