Hi,

I have an iMac running OS X 10.7.4, with 2x1TB external hard drives (one for photos, one for time machine). I have noticed that even when the Mac is asleep or shutdown completely, the hard drives stay powered up and spinning. The noise and light is a bit annoying as they're in our bedroom! Any suggestions? They are connected through a powered USB hub... would that make a difference perhaps?

You can attempt to put the hard drives to sleep in the settings. In System Preferences, Energy Saver, check the box that says "Put the hard disks to sleep when possible". If that doesn't work, disconnect the hard drives when you're not using the computer.
