I have a Canon 3Ti. Can I by-pass the Canon software and go directly to iPhoto?

Sure. If you own a late model Mac that has a SD card reader included, you can just plug the SD card into the reader and upload directly to iPhoto. Or if have an older Mac, you can use a portable card reader. Another way would be to attach your Canon camera via its USB port directly into your Mac. Doing it this way requires that the camera be turned on.
