Hi i'm new to OS X and i was wondering if there's a way to auto resize the width of a finder window. When opening up various folders i end up having to scroll left/right, i'd rather have the window maximize its width accordingly.

Once you've set the window size in an open Finder folder, that's what sticks, and really how it should. I think most people would find it very aggravating to have the window resize constantly as you drill down through the folder hierarchy.

Your best solution would be to navigate to a folder where you find this most problematic; make the necessary adjustment (the green icon will help make the width be a perfect fit); then close the window. From there on, every time you open Finder, it'll be set at that.

...but, if you then resize even one time, it's all for naught.

Well I'll be danged. I never realized that the size wasn't saved by "normally" closing a window until you posted this. I assumed it kept the size and view preferences, but it looks like it is just the view prefs. Thanks for sharing.
