Our company has new employee who brought her own mac. Our network is a basic windows based network. I was able to assign an IP to this mac and get internet connection. This mac sees other PC's on the network including our server. When trying to connect to the server, "connection failed" message appears. I've created a user on the server for this person already and just want her to type in her user name and password and access the files on our server. Can this be done without tremendous IT know-how? BTW, I tried connecting by IP address but same results.

it may be that the connection started with afp://servername

Try smb://servername from the top menu Go > Connect to server
