Hello all,

I'm using a G4 Power PC "Silver Door" Mac with a DVI hook-up and my old Dell monitor is dying. I have a replacement Dell E173FPc that only has a VGA hook-up that I hope to use.

My problem is I bought a DVI to VGA adapter and tried to hook-up the Dell to my Mac and all I get is a "sleep mode. move mouse or type any key" notice. When I type or move the mouse nothing happens. I can't wake the screen up.

Does this mean my Mac won't recognize the Dell? The video card isn't able to do the DVI-VGA recognition?

Or what?

Appreciate the help as I can't afford another monitor at the moment.

What display resolution are you set to? I'm wondering if your Mac is set to output a higher resolution than what the new monitor supports. Here's what it should support:

Also try rebooting in Safe Mode to see if you can at least get video in that mode:

As a last resort, you may want to try resetting the PMU:

These are the best suggestions I can think of at the moment. I have no specific experience with your configuration here, but if anything will work short of new hardware, these ideas are pretty much it, I think.

Thanks. I tried some of that and found out the cable is the problem. So I'm looking for another monitor with DVI hook-up.

Thanks for your advice, though.
