mail sent from iPhone doesn't sync to my MacBook Pro

I'm guessing the problem is in setting up my iCloud prefs on my MacBook Pro. When I check the box for mail and notes, it tells me to put in an iCloud email address that can't be changed. But the dialog window shows that "@me.com" will be appended to whatever I put in the box. This is confusing me. Do I just put in my regular email address (which my iPhone is set up with and with which it's working fine) or is it looking for something else? Thanks.
