I wish to switch back to Snow Leopard from Lion. When inserting the disk and clicking on Install, I get a message stating:

"You can't use this version of the application install Mac OS X with this version of Mac OS X. " "You have Install Mac OS 23.1"

This disk came with my 2009 iMac which I purchased new.

What is the recommended solution? Or what are my options?

Thanks for your help!

To go back to SL from Lion, you are going to need to make a Time Machine backup, then erase the hard drive then boot with the OSX DVD that came with your machine. Then you can migrate from the Backup.

Did you boot your 2009 iMac with the original install disk? Or are you just trying to install Snow Leopard from the disk?

You should be able to boot the iMac with its original install DVD, go to Disk Utility from Utilities at the top menu, set the hard drive to one partition by removing the Lion Recovery partition, erase the hard drive, and then reinstall Snow Leopard. Don't forget to backup everything first and afterward run software update.

Instead of going through all that trouble above, why don't you wait until the end of this month when Mountain Lion is released? Install Mountain Lion. Perhaps you'll like that better than Lion.

Not sure I understand? What do you mean Lion does not recognize Word? If you're trying to install MS Office 2004 or older in Lion, it can't be done because Lion will not accept any app that has PPC code in it. And yes, Mountain Lion also will not run any app that has PPC code. You need to update your version of Office to at least 2008, but best to update to 2011.
