As first hinted in February, Apple's upcoming OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion operating system update will not include support for certain models of Macs with older Intel chipsets with integrated graphics.

Be interesting to see how long the first 'work around' takes for left out Macs after official release. Two maybe three days?

There are people already working on it I am told! :D It's a video driver issue.

I have a 2007 Mac Pro with the ATI 5770 Graphics Card installed. Do you thing it will upgrade to ML? It is the same model cards that are in the newer Mac Pro's.

Just curious.

You should be OK. The graphics restriction is only with those chipsets that are integrated on the MB such as the Intel GMA 950 and X3100. Don't worry about it.

You may not meet the processor requirements though. The tech specs page states that Mac Pros built after (and including) early 2008 are supported.

It says at Apple the only the 2008 and newer Mac Pro will be compatible.

I wonder why? I just looked up the specs on both the 2007 and 2008 models and it seems they're both fully 64 bit. I see very little difference between them but maybe I'm missing something?

Those were my thoughts also.

Good question. The processors are different generations of Xeon (Clovertown and Harpertown) but both are quad core 64-bit processors. So perhaps it isn't the CPU and is the GPU (which are different expect for the GeForce 8800GT).

The "EFI" architecture on pre-2008 Mac Pro's is 32-bit...and my understanding is ML is 64-bit only.

This is why I sold my 2006 Mac Pro a couple years ago.

Nice find! That would explain the limitations and also highlight how I only joined the Mac world in 2008. ;)

If I didn't (at one time) have one of the older Mac Pro's...I wouldn't have known this.;) They do have 64-bit cpu's...but only 32-bit EFI.

64-bit EFI came with the 2008 Mac Pro's & beyond.

Thanks Nick. Mactracker basically says nothing about EFI architecture but lists both as 64 bit.

All the trouble with the late 2007 Macbook and ML is there is no 64-Bit Video driver for GMA3100. That is being worked on but not by Apple. Someone came up with one that allows good video but You Tube vids are black. Being worked on as I type this I am told.

So I guess you are telling me that my attempt to install it on my 2006 Mac Pro would be an utter failure? What am I supposed to do for fun now actually talk to people face to face?

Don't give it away too early Sly. Reckon within seven days from release there will be work arounds published for your Mac Pro 1.1.

There was some talk on Mac Rumours months ago about some one even working on an EFI update.

I won't be parting with that beast any time soon. At the very least I will wait and see if there will be further updates to that line. I would probably still have my "cheese grater" G5 if it had not already suffered a demise.

Since I have a clone of that machine already the worst that's likely to happen is it won't work.

Thanks for the replies. Even if my Mac Pro does not run ML, I will not be selling it. To nice of a Mac. Hopefully the work arounds will be good.
