If all your music is on your iPod, but your computer isn't backed up, what do you do? Could you use a program like iRip to safely back it all up on a huge external?

What is it you're trying to do? Copy your music from the iPod to your Mac in iTunes? If so, then iRip will work. ($19.95)

My iMac crashed and died. I had my music on the hard drive, but I still have my iPod. If I bought a new Mac I'd want to upload all that music from the iPod to the new computer.

Sure. iRip will copy all the music from your iPod to the new Mac's copy of iTunes. Next time though, you may wish to backup all your music using Apple's iCloud. Read the following from Apple: LINK

I know it sounds stupid but I always worried that if I used the iCloud, somehow my files would be lost. Do you use it? How much is it?

It's $25 a year, I use it and I don't see how you could think your files would be lost.

But more simply, why not just back up your computer?

Try "Phone to Mac". It's for the iPhone and iPod and it works with Leopard.
