changing RAM from 1600mhz to 1066mhz

Hi there,

Just bough a 2x4gb 1600Mhz So-DIMM from Kingston to upgrade my early 2009 MacBook Pro.
When I changed the ram modules, the only thing I heard was three bips.
After some time, I realized that this models (MAC model is 5.1) only accept RAM running at 1066mhz.
Yes, I should have made some research before buying the RAM modules

Obviously, I do not want to lose my money, so I was wondering if there is a way to tune this RAM modules to work at 1066mhz. Is there a way to do this in a MAC? I know there are some apps for that in WINDOWS.

stick with what the specific one recommend by the ram manufacturer
try crucial.com see what they recommend.
there are requirements to fit for ram upgrade.

You are absolutely right. I should have paid more attention.

Althoug the safest thing to do know would be to follow your advise, I just wonder if there is a way to avoid it.
Since I will lower the speed, there will be no extra-stress upon the components. Maybe I can get away with this mess by "down-clocking" the RAM.
Is there a way? I'm willing to try it, before I spend more money on some RAM.

Trying to install 1600mhz ram into a computer that requires 1066mhz ram...is like trying to put 6 gallons of water into a 5 gallon bucket...it just won't work.

The reason why you're getting the "3 beeps"...is specifically due to incompatible ram. Get the correct ram!

I take it that you want to upgrade from 2x2gb to 2x4gb. In a way you have to abide by the
way the configuration set up.
If you need the real speed upgrade your hard drive to SSD, along with Ram upgrade your
mbp will speed up to certain degree.
Again it depends on how you like it, ram upgrade might do it for you.

Actually, I need more RAM because of MAYA renders. They are batched in RAM, not in disk. SO, 2x1gb of RAM is clearly not enough.

Does anyone knows if there is an option in BIOS that set's the RAM speed?

2x2 gb is the max you can upgrade to.

Ok, I give up. Will try to get back my money.

Macintosh computers do not have BIOS!

You can upgrade your MacBook Pro to a zillion Mhz memory but it's still only going to run at the factory designed bus speed. You're just wasting money and could possibly damage your MacBook Pro. Only use the memory that was designed for your Mac.

I'm not 100% sure the pin arrangement on 1066mhz and 1600mhz is even the same (may not fit).

And like chscag mentioned…you won't see any performance enhancement…since the computer wasn't designed to use this ram (logic board architecture).
