I upgraded from Snow Leopard 10.6. to Lion 10.7.4 and now cannot open my Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 (I have had it since it was new and it is up to date. I have Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents and get the error message from Finder "You can't open the application Microsoft PowerPoint; word; or Excel because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.

That is correct. You need to update your Office version (to 08 or 11), or rebuild to 10.6 again.
