flash drive initialization issue

Can someone tell me how to initialize or erase data from a flash drive? Suddenly
it's telling me I cannot erase anything (it's not "locked") nor can I figure out how to
just clear the whole thing and start over. :( Any instructions will be appreciated.
I should know this! I've been using Macs since "Lisa" !!

What Mac are you using and what version of OSX?

Have you tried to erase in Disk Utility? Have you tried the partition tab? Do both fail and what is the message?
