I am looking to install a new larger capacity hdd into my macbook 6,1. I understand all the technical aspects of installing the drive. Where I am confused is when I now install the original OS factory disc(snow leopard) What do I have to do to format or partition the drive. Some say go to disc utility and hit erase. Some say hit partition and name the drive.
Also all of my data is up to date on my time capsule(time machine) so do I need to do a full os reinstall or can I just restore using time machine?
Thanks

In my opinion, the best way to swap the drive and restore your data is by using cloning software. You have two choices: Carbon Copy Cloner ($20) or SuperDuper ($27.95).

With the above software (both have trial versions that are functional), copy the contents of your old drive to the new one. The software will make the new drive bootable. Swap the drives and you're in business. One caveat: You will need an external enclosure or adapter to do the cloning.
