Hi All,

I have a late 2009 iMac which has as standard 2 X 2Gb or ram installed.

I am looking to upgrade to 2 X 4Gb but I have been told it will only actually use 2Gb and would not use the remaining 2Gb on each card?

Is this correct or not?

If you own a late 2009 iMac, it must either be a 21.5" or 27" model. In which case the maximum amount of memory for both machines is 16 GB.

However, the early and mid 2009 models all have a maximum memory of 8 GB. So which model do you have?

In any event which ever model you own, you can use 2 x 4 GB modules for a total of 8 GB. All the info I provided here is taken from Mactracker which is usually correct.
