The OS is ver. 10.5. Whenever I insert the DVD I hear a couple of soft beeps and some noises like it's doing something then it ejects the cd, this happens MOST of the times but a few times the dvd will play perfectly so the dvd does not work consistently, any ideas please?

Unfortunately, slot drives used in Macs have a shorter life than standard tray operated drives. Your drive may be dirty inside or it may be defective. You can try using a can of compressed air by blowing a couple of short bursts in the slot. If that doesn't work, the only other solution is to replace the drive. Or, you can buy an inexpensive external drive.
