Use of Maxtor one touch 4 800 GB

I need to free space on my mac and my brother gave me a Maxtor one touch 4, 800 GB, but I really don't know how to use it. Any suggestions?

You first need to determine if the Maxtor can be used with your Mac. It may be formatted as NTFS in which case it will be read only. If it's formatted as FAT-32 or HFS+, it can be used directly with your Mac. In the latter case, just attach the drive via USB to your Mac and you should see it mounted on your desktop.

Once it's mounted on your desktop, you can drag and drop to it from the Mac. Note that you may have to reformat the drive if it's formatted as NTFS. You should also determine how much room is left on the drive. You might wish to erase the drive first.
