Word 2011 is so doggy if a bird flew through the room it would point. It's a replicative screen hog. 'Customizing' is limited--you can't get rid of individual commands or trim the thing down to one line of commands. In previous versions, outline commands would pop down when you opened outline mode. Now you have to enable the Ribbon, which holds them, so it's sort of hard to get rid of it. Microsoft software engineers must be bored and sadistic. Bother.

Works just fine here with or without the ribbon. If the ribbon annoys you, turn it off from preferences. You probably won't use half of what's shown on the ribbon anyway. And you can aways access those items through the menus. Also, you can remove or add toolbars as needed to gain more working space.

How to recreate the old outline toolbar, only there in outline view?

Well sure, you can turn off the ribbon, and make a remaining toolbar look just like you want. And then you go to outline view, and find that that great feature, the outline toolbar that appeared only in outline mode, is gone.:Angry-Tongue:

So sure, you can build an outline toolbar, when there isn't room in your custom toolbar for all those outline commands, but then it's there all the time. That's a worse space waster than the collapsed ribbon. (Which is the other way to get outline commands.):Angry-Tongue:

Anybody know how to recreate that old, outline toolbar that only appeared during outline view? :\
