I am trying to update my brother's computer, however the last OS X update he has is 10.5.8. I am wondering how to download the newest one without downloading everything in between. Thanks for your help.

G'day and welcome to the forums.

That is as high as you can go with Leopard. If the computer is an Intel Core 2 Duo you can purchase Snow Leopard OS X.6 from Apple Online, $29.00, update that to OS X.6.8 and then another $29.00 to download Lion OS X.7 from the App Store.

If the computer meets the Intel Core 2 Duo mark simplest way may well be to await Mountain Lion, OS X.8, due next month sometime for $20.00.

You and your brother should be aware when leaving Leopard OS X.5.8, older PowerPC software will not work.

I think that 10.5.8 was the last update for Leopard(OSX 10.5). For anything after that; ie, Snow Leopard(10.6) or Lion(10.7) you will have to pay for.

Depending on the Mac's specs will depend which one he/you can buy.

Thanks guys. So would it be possible to skip to 10.7 or do I have to get the 10.6 first?

What TM is saying is that you have to buy Snow Leopard first, because the only (well almost the only) way to get Lion is to get the Mac App Store, and you need Snow Leopard for that. You COULD buy a Lion USB key for $70 and jump up directly but why spend the extra money?

Speaking of extra money, the later iLife apps (iMovie, Garageband, iPhoto) won't be included with Snow or Lion and your old ones may "break" depending on how old they are. You can buy the updated titles from the Mac App Store for $15 each, which allows you to only buy the ones you actually want. Nice.

if you wait till next month for ML, you can save $9 by skipping the Lion, from OSX 6 to 8.
