Hide Running App Icons

How do I hide an application's icon in the dock even when its running? I want it to be running but I dont want its icon to take up space. Ever.

press command-h and the app windows will disappear, but it will still be in the dock, i imagine there's some way to do this in terminal, but i have no idea how!

I know Quicksilver can do this for example, but I think it has to be coded into the app. Press command(apple)+option(alt)+d to hide the dock?
