Just want to pose this question out to you guys and see if I can get some opinions.
Would it be worth it to pick up a used mid-2009 MBP 17" since they have quietly discontinued the model? Specs for it are: Antiglare screen 2.8ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB ram, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT.
I can pick it up for a fairly reasonable price - I just want some opinions on whether it would be smart since they have discontinue this line.
Thanks.

Personally I would get it if I was looking for "good price" 17" MacBook Pro. Apple has discontinued lots & lots of models...no big deal.:)

The 17" MacBook Pro is basically just a 15" MacBook Pro with a larger display. So from a "Support from Apple" standpoint...there's really no difference between a 2009 17" MacBook Pro and a 2009 15" MacBook Pro.

What are you concerns...that are different from buying any sort of used computer?

No concerns - as I still have a 12" PB-G4 and it's still running flawlessly- I just wanted some opinions. I can pick it up for fairly reasonable IMO $500-$600 price range or should I just save and then invest in a 15" MBP+R.

Honestly, I see ZERO reason for investing in one simply because they are being discontinued.
If you need or want a 17in MBP then buy one . . . if not, save your money for something you do need/want.

FWIW (and I know opinions vary) I briefly owned a 17in MBP and now have a 15 incher. IMO the 15 inch version is a better choice/value. And when I need the screen real estate I hook up to my 37in Monitor.

Depends on your computing needs. If the 17" will do what you need it to do...get it. If not...get something with more computing power.

If you can get this 17" MBP for $500-$600...and a new 15" MBP with retina display costs $2199 - $2799...you do the math!!!;)

That's a LOT of additional saving!!! These are COMPLETELY different shopping "neighborhoods"!;)

That is an analysis that I can heartily agree with. :)

It's not a need - it's a just to pick it up because it's available at a fair price ( a deal if you want to call it) Just wanted some opinion to see if it would be a wise with it being discontinued.
I will eventually get the MBP+R but rather than wait a month for shipping I'm holding out for them to be in stock. Plus after the fiasco with my Black MB I tend to wait a little bit before buying the latest and greatest.

If this is the situation...then I say just wait until the new 15" MBP with retina display is available (anybody can wait 1 month, or whatever it takes).:)

Why waste the time buying, setting up, and possibly selling this 17" MBP...when in 4-6 weeks (hopefully) you'll have a brand new 15" MBP??:)

The 17" sounds like a good deal...and if you don't mind the potential hassle of buying it, setting it up, and eventually selling it...get it. I'm not sure what your computing needs are (if you REALLY need the new 15").

Heck...after using this 17" MBP...you may find it does everything you need it to!:) I'm currently using a 2008 MBP (lower specs than the one you're talking about)...and it's a great computer...does everything I need it to do!!!:)

p.s. By the way...your profile lists at least two different Apple notebook computers, one with an "i5" cpu, and one with an "i7" cpu. Why the heck do you need a 17" core 2 duo MBP...or even the new 15" MBP??

To put it bluntly "it's about the toys" - I have the entire house networked and just about a MB or MBP inside each room. I wanted to pick up the MBP 17" because that is the one model that I do not have and as I mentioned the price was decent enough - setting up and reloading everything isn't an issue nor would it be a hassle - it would actually prove to be a good learning experience for one of my employees.

Totally understandable!

Just trying to get the full story/understand the complete situation.:)

Good luck,

So . . . now I'm curious. Which version do you have in the "Throne" Room? :p ;)

Hahaha none in there yet.... Although I do occasionally bring my MBA or iPad3 with me if it's something that I really can't put down... those are the two I'm usually on when checking mail and just surfing ( portability and the instant on and off) - I do my heavy computing needs or work on the MBP 15.
