• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.

I am trying to do a quick time conversion for my final cut pro project and I get the message about not enought disk space on my start up drive. First question is what does that mean in plain English. Second question is that I have 297 GB on my external hard drive and I have used 240 GB of it, leaving over 50 GB of space. My project is only 2 GB so why am I getting this message?

Is your Mac booting from the internal drive or directly from that external? If it is booting from that internal drive how much space is left on it? Video projects often take up several times the actual file size of the project for swap files etc, while they are open. That's is in addition to the usual amount off space OS X uses.

What do you mean by booting? Do you mean where the source project is stored?

Booting means where your OS X installation is. For example, if you are using a Macbook but have an external drive plugged in for your project and nothing else, your boot drive is the drive in your Macbook, not the external one.

If you copy some stuff from your computer's internal hard drive onto your external to make room, the error should disappear.

I tried converting the project to the internal drive as a quick time movie. After an hour of converting all of a sudden the message "General Error," with no explanation, comes up with an exclamation point next to it. Do you know what this means and how I find out what it means? All I am trying to do is convert my Final Cut project (about 30 minutes long) to a format that I can put on YouTube. Can you suggest a step by step way to do this without encountering constant error messages. I can get the conversion going, but in the middle of all the conversions I have tried I always get nebulous error messages. It is very frustrating because I always use Windows Movie Maker's converter, and FreeMake video converter, with never any issues. Thanks.

I spoke too soon, reached 75% conversion and error message came up again. Both my source project and my conversion are being done on my hard drive which has 400 GB of free space. Thanks.
