Sound stops working below certain volume.

Hi, I recently discovered, that if I put my volume on my iPhone 4 below about 7/10 volume, it goes all crackly and is hard to hear. I think it happened the other day when I was listening max volume with really bassy music, although no matter what headphones I put in, the same always happens, surely if I have just bass-overloaded, it would be the headphones that were used at the time that would have broken?
