Scanning Pictures

I have a 21.5 inch iMac mid 2011 model, with snow leopard. Using a HP Photosmart C4100.
I am Scanning a whole bunch of old photos onto my mac and noticed it was taking up a lot of hard drive space everytime i scanned (approx. 200 MB per 5 picture scan) i have all my scanned pictures set to 300 dpi jpeg and only take up about 400 to 800 KB per image. Every time i scan a few i just see my free space monitor drop at a fast rate (which at 400 to 800 KB per image seems kind of odd to be dropping at this rate).
Im hoping someone has run into this problem before, because i started out with 150 GB of free space and am now down to 139 GB of free space (have only scanned about 100 pictures so far)

This is driving me nuts, i have stopped for right now. I was looking at the last book i scanned, and it was 39 images total, i selected the folder i put them in and it says 22 MB! where the **** is all my hard drive space going?

i guess i was freaking out for no reason, i closed down the fax/ scanner application and my hard drive free space jumped back up to 150GB! Sorry about that. I still find it weird that it takes up such a large amount of storage while you have the application open.

It's not unusual for a scanner application to create temporary space in order to scan and form the images on the hard drive. The temp space should go away when you close the app. So what you're seeing is normal.

What app were you using to do the scanning? It may be my imagination but I think the process chscag described is more noticeable in some apps than others.

Im just using the native scanner application that came with my mac, no third party application.
