Color lines and dots appearing on right side of screen Macbook Pro

Hello all,
starting today I have been getting this weird screen flickering. there are many colors and it just appears on the right side of my screen. when i touch my screen or move it, it appears.

I have a 2009 macbook pro, MacBookPro5,5, A1278.

I do not have the apple warranty, but is this a problem in 2009s that they fix/replace?

I would be willing to bet that the display flex cable needs to be reseated or replaced.

I don't think Apple would cover the repair outside of the warranty.

If it were mine, I'd try reseating the cable - this involves taking the bottom panel off, locating the cable (it's at the upper-left corner, if I remember correctly), unplugging and re-plugging it in.
