Iphone 3gs battery problems?

I have a iPhone 3gs with ios 5.1.1. I charge it with a broken cord (the coating is ripped not the actual wire), and now it dies 1-2 minutes after charging it. I tried powering off and on, ive tried using a different charging cord, the only thing i haven't tried it resetting it. I plugged it into my computer and now it turns on (shows the apple logo) and dies rapidly. Any fix?

My next step would be to do a full reset/restore on it in iTunes. Make sure you're using a good cord.

If that doesn't work, fortunately replacing the battery isn't terribly difficult in that iPhone model.
