Mountain Lion

After being invited to join the seeding programme (UK spelling) for Mountain Lion and reading the licence (UK spelling) agreement I was concerned about the irrevocable loss of my existing OS.

I have a Charity account spreadsheet and other documents that I don't want to lose.

Whilst I would be happy to provide feedback to Apple on the new system I would like to hear from others who have participated and get some reassurance.

I'm not currently participating in the Mountain Lion test so take this with a grain of salt, You have valid concerns not only for Mountain Lion. but for any beta program. It seems to me that your concerns could be alleviated somewhat by doing two steps before Installing Mountain Lion:

1. Clone your current OS X install to another drive before installing Mountain Lion. This way if something goes wrong you can get back up and running with little/no lost time. SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner are great for things like this. At the moment I am using Cloner because it copies Lion's recovery partition.

2. Back up critical data often. It might also be good to do a test run with a copy of the dat files to see if files saved under Mountain Lion open properly when you switch back. By testing this on a copy of the data first you'll know about problems without risking too much critical data.

Or, you can do as many of us do when testing new systems... partition the drive and install ML on a second partition leaving the first one for your Lion install. In other words, setup a dual boot.

Should have suggested that, I've done it numerous times myself.
