Here's an overview of Disk Utility. Look at the section on restoring data ATPM 17.05 - How To: Using the Free Disk Utility on Your Mac

I've tried just about everything... from doing a clean install, to repair disk, to simply backing it up. Nothing appears to be working. I'm at the point of just purchasing a new HD.. questions is, I have no idea what the best possible HD upgrade for a 2.26 mid 09 mbp is? (8b of ram if that matters). Anyone have any ideas?

If Disk Utility is not fixing things...then your HD may be a goner.

As far as a replacement drive. In my opinion any name grand HD is fine. Just shop for best $$$/gigabyte.

Try these guys:

OWC

...or any other vendor you prefer. You need a 2.5" SATA drive.

Your hard drive is probably defective, so yes, you likely need a new one. Other World Computing has hard drives for your MBP. You need a 2.5" x 9.5mm SATA drive either 5400 or 7200 RPM.

BTW I just bought a 2.5" drive that should fit your Mac about a week ago from Newegg.com for about $80. This hybrid drive cut my boot time on a 2008 MB Pro to about 35 seconds even though I let Lion open four or five programs on boot up. Solid State Hybrid Drive -Bare Drive
