I have a squijillion opened Installer packages in my Downloads folder, can I safely trash these? Since the box is open does that mean it's been installed in the proper location? How do I reset my preferences to automatically dump stuff that gets downloaded here? It's got about 3GBs in it now. I'm thinking it is the reason my MacBook is running as slow as snail snot at the moment. All of my iTune purchases are in there as well. If they are in my iTunes Library can I dump these too?

Yes, you can delete installer packages after the application has been properly installed and is working correctly. And as long as your music is in the iTunes library (make sure) you can delete the duplicates from the downloads folder.

If installing the application was simply dragging it into the applications folder, then yes you can discard the installation package.
If the application was installed using an installer, then you might want to keep the installer package as it might also contain an un-installer ( in case you need it )
