connecting macbook pro to tv screen problems

Last night me and my dad hooked up my macbook pro to my tv via hdmi cable(needed a bigger screen for world of warcraft) and it worked perfectly fine. Last night before i went to bed i turned my tv off but left my macbook on. This morning i woke up to find that the computer screen was not fitting on my tv. I have checked the tv settings and it doesnt seem like the problem and I also fiddled with the display settings and i cant find out what was wrong. I would really appreciate you guys help.
