iPhone 3GS SIM card and activation help!

I have an iPhone 3GS and I wanted to wipe all the memory off of it. So I Went to Setting and then General and pressed Reset all. After it had cleared all the memory, it brought up a screen to set up the iPhone. I went through the steps and Then I got to the set to connect to a network. Unfortunately, my iPhone didn't have a SIM card and it wouldn't connect to my wifi. So I borrowed my friends sim card and it still wouldnt connect to a network. All I want is to activate it and use it like an iPod touch, but I can't activate it! I realize I've made a stupid mistake, but does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

Connect it to itunes and set it up that way. you shouldnt need a sim card to do that.

Yeah, I've tried that as well and I thought it wouldn't ask me for the sim card, but it did. Anything else I can do?
