the group listed in address book does not show up in email program

Just to check the obvious I assume that at least some of the members of the group have e-mail addresses entered on their address cards? Now that that's put of the way what actually happens if you open a new e-mail and start typing the group name into the To field?
If I recall correctly the group name does not show in a list in Mail till it has been used once. Even then under normal circumstances it does not show in a list but appears in the address field as one of the autocomplete options.
