screen turns grainy and white unibody macbook

When I am using my 09 macbook the screen will turn grainy and more white. It does blink a little bit too. The mouse will not move when this happens. It usually only lasts for 10 seconds or so. During this time, the screen will progress to get more grainy and more white in color. Any idea what might be causing this issue?
